7 Songs to Calm Anxiety

Anxiety is a bitch. Depression is a bitch. When you’re in the midst of anxiety or a panic attack I know as well as anyone that it’s so difficult to find your feet and bring yourself back into control. Anxiety can be all consuming and one thing I find helps me a lot when I’m feeling down is music. I’ve compiled a short list of the songs that I find best to listen to when I’m not feeling myself. The thing these seven songs have in common is that they all make me feel like I’m flying and completely weightless. So lie back, put some headphones in (EVERYTHING sounds better with headphones), and enjoy.

Lord Huron – The Night We Met

You may recognise this song if you watched the stunning Netflix original ’13 Reasons Why’. It was one of the most popular songs from the entire programme as it captured the mood and emotions so beautifully.

The line “I had all and then most of you, some, and now none of you” completely destroys me.

Bon Iver – Holocene

I can’t tell you what it is about this song, it’s just magical. It gives me the feeling that I’m above the clouds looking down on the world and I’m completely alone and at peace. His voice is just heavenly, and the sonic soundscape of this song blows my mind.

“And at once I knew I was not magnificent”.

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek

This was actually the first Imogen Heap song I ever heard and I completely fell in love with it. It just stops me in my tracks. I know that normally when you hear the word “vocoder” you think of the autotuned wonder of the likes of ‘Believe’ by Cher, but Immy uses it in such a beautiful, original way. (And if you say that Jason Darulo came first I will punch you).

Lana Del Rey – Black Beauty

It’s no surprise that I have a bit of Lana on here is it? This song gives me goosebumps in the best way.

Life is beautiful, but you don’t have a clue”.

Ben Howard – I Forget Where We Were

This song is just epic (it was amazing live, too). His voice is so haunting and beautiful, and the music in this song just sends me to another dimension. The solo section is just mind-blowing. To be fair, the whole album is just as good as this song, but this one has always been my favourite.

“Maybe it was peace at last, who knew?”

Kodaline – High Hopes

I love the way this song builds, a really easy and lovely song to listen to. It makes me feel optimistic about the future and that things will get better.

“It’s time to let it go, get out, and start again”

Ludovico Einaudi – Nuvole Bianche

This is one of my favourite Einaudi songs, it’s so beautiful. In English, “Nuvole Bianche” means “White Clouds” (appropriate for my flying feeling, right!?).

(Also I thought of this one at the last minute, so I thought I’d add an eighth one because I can).

I’d love to hear your favourite calming songs!
